The most challenging part about farm house sink after choosing one, is how to get it installed. For the whole installation process, there are two options on your hand.
One, you can take the help of the professional installers. It might be a little costly, as you would have already spent enough money on the sink. Here you will have to spend again for getting it installed. The second option is, you can do it by yourself.
At the first glance it might seem a little difficult for you, but if you know how get it done, it shouldn’t be much of a problem. There are some specific guidelines as an answer to the question – how to install a farm sink in existing cabinet?.
But for before doing it by yourself I’d like to tell you about the reason why it is a good idea to get it installed by yourself. The first reason I’d like to say is financial.
As I have mentioned earlier that you will have to invest both on the sink and its installation if you are going to hire the professionals to do the job. But if you can get it done all by yourself you might be able to save a good amount of money and can later invest on something better.
The second major reason is, if you can install the sink by yourself, it will add a great boost to your self confidence. A man of household chores is often appreciated. From that perspective, a major job like installing a farm sink in your kitchen can bring some amazing change in your image to others.
The total installation process of a farm sink is a step-by-step process, where you need to follow a specific sequence for ensuring the completion of the job.
Step – 1: Take out the old sink and counter top
Obviously you are not going to install the farm sink without taking out the first one. Disconnecting the previous sink can also be a little difficult as for that you will have to take out the counter top and any kind of mistakes and errors can get your counter top damaged.
So for taking out the sink, remove the counter top carefully. Take the help of a helper, who can be a member of your family as well, who can hand you the required tools over to get the sink detached.
Taking out counter top what has to be done at first to remove the old sink. This can be a really tricky part. Because in case of laminated counter tops it can be comparatively easy to remove the whole counter top intact, so that it can be reshaped somewhere else in the house or out of the house, where you won’t have to worry about the kitchen getting dirty at the time of cutting it.
But it is also true that as they are quite big in size, it might not be possible for you to remove the whole counter top without cutting it into pieces. However, after removing the counter top, you can get the sink detached for restructuring the cabinet.
Step – 2: Cutting the supporting frames
Unlike the regular sinks, farm sinks are quite heavy. So, for that it is important for you to make sure that your kitchen cabinet are being strong enough to hold the whole of the sink.
Now for ensuring that you will have to check the structure of your existing cabinet as it is going need some modification to hold your new sink. If your cabinet doesn’t contain enough support, then get some support frames ready for that.
To do that you will need some wooden bars and cut them according to desired size and make marks on the bottom with the pencil so that you can put those supporting bars in the right position by putting them in holes made with the oscillating saw.
Now you will need to attach some wood braces, so that it can be easier for the bars to hold the weight as these bars are going to help them to hold it in a better manner.
Keep their size 2”x4” and get a cross piece as well, because a little additional support can strengthen the whole structure.
Step –3: Notch out the cabinet front
For installing the apron front sinks the front of the cabinet also need some adjustments. In case you’re having any confusion about getting the accurate size of the front portion that need to be adjusted or cut, the templates that you will get with sink can be really helpful over here.
With the help of the templates, it will become easy for you to understand the measurement, that you will require to fit the sink. Get some handsaw to get that job done.
You might a need a jigsaw as well. Getting the smooth shape on this one without any professional training or machines might be a little difficult and you may end up with a finishing that is not as smooth as the professional would have done.
But that shouldn’t be a problem because that non-smooth portion will stay under the sink. The best space for bearing surface is below 5 to 8 inches from the counter top level. Posts with the size of 4”X4 can help you secure that.
Step – 4: Testing the fit
Now get your sink and check if that is being fitted according the size or not. While checking the fit and picking up the sink, don’t even think about picking it up all by yourself.
You might be strong, but getting yourself injured in the attempt. So, when you are going to check the fitting of the sink, take help to pick it up. If you have done the cutting and adjusting part properly, it is suppose to be a perfect fit.
Step – 5: Get the counter top back in position
Once you are confirmed that the sink is a perfect fit, get the counter top reinstalled. If you want to have a different counter top with different materials, you can do that as well.
There are materials like Rock, Granite, soapstone, decorative laminate, tile, wood, etc. I personally won’t suggest you wood as the material for counter top as the water spilled water can get it damaged.
So, it will be better if you can just choose something that won’t get damaged with water on it.
You might be thinking that what will be best is getting the sink installed by the professionals, but the truth is even you can get it done as well all by yourself.
With the help of proper instruction it is nothing too difficult to do. It is not only going to save you money but also will get you the confidence about yourself that, yeah! I can do it.
Moreover, it will get you an improved image in front of your friends as it nothing that always happens that someone has remodeled their own kitchen and contributed in an active way, not only by the financial means but also in the other aspects like getting a whole sink installed by himself.
I hope now you are not having the same feeling anymore that you can’t do it by yourself.
