How to Fix a Slow Draining Sink (3 Effective Solutions)

Last Updated on December 7, 2019

What do you consider as the perfect incident to piss you off when you have a ton of dishes to get cleaned? No, I am not talking about the dishes or the cleaning, okay?

Sooner or later you will have to get them cleaner after all, if you don’t think keeping it dirty is something cool (what surely is not!). To me it is when my sink is draining slowly.

Can you imagine how irritating that can be, when you have just cleaned a few of them and you’ll have to wait for 10 more minutes when the wasted water will drain away?

This is why I came up with the solutions to get rid of that irritating aspect of the any sink.

Solutions for fixing up a slow draining sink

It is not that sinks can drain slowly only with one specific reason. So, I’m going to tell you about some of the solutions that are pretty much useful when water is taking more time than should be drain on your sink.

Solution – 01: Cleaning up with the self-made drain cleaner

Yeah! It is true that you can make a drain cleaner all by yourself. All you need is boiling water, vinegar and baking soda.

The fact is, it is not always possible for you to call a plumber now and then, especially when it is a common and regular problem with your sink that it drains slowly.

Moreover, the plumber doesn’t work for free either. So, learning to do it by it yourself can save some of your buck and save your time as well. Let me tell you step by step, as I think that will make it easier for you.

Step -1:

The first thing you will have to do over here is get a pot full of hot boiling water. Then, pour that hot boiling water in the drain.

Step – 2:

Now take a cup of baking soda and pour it directly down the drain. After that, wait for 5-10 minutes.

Step – 3:

The third step is similar to step – 2. The only difference here is you are going to need a cup of white vinegar instead of baking soda. Put the vinegar in a cup and like the baking soda, put it down the drain as well.

The vinegar and baking soda will come to a chemical reaction at this stage where there will a good amount of foam will be generated within.

It will soften the gunk and grease that took place within the drain along with all the things that goes down there over the time. Keep it that way for 5 – 10 minutes as well.

Step – 4:

Again, like the step – 1, pour another pot of water with hot boiling water.

Step – 5:

Now open the hot tap water and keep the it running for 5 minutes, so that everything within the drain can get flushed away.

Solution – 2: Cleaning the sink stopper

Yes, the slow draining problem can be occurred due to that as well. It is pretty much obvious that it catches things like hair, soap and other debris, which ultimately leads to slow draining.

The manufacturers these days kept in mind that the stopper can eventually cause slow draining as well. So, they kept the system to get it detached from the sink just by simply unscrewing it.

So, if you are facing the problem as well, all you need to do is unscrew the stopper, clean it up and get it back on its place.

Solution – 3: Lifting out the debris

It is quite normal that debris that was gathered over time in the drain can cause the slow draining problem. To get rid of them all you need is a drain cleaning tool, which is also known as the small hair clog tool.

With a view to clean the debris, you need to detach the sink stopper. Then put the tool in and wiggle it. After that, gently pull it up where you will see the debris has come up. Once the debris is cleaned, the sink will drain again properly.

Last words

The sink is surely nothing that you are not going to use frequently. As an important part of the kitchen or bathroom, sink is surely the most used portion and you obviously can’t help it getting the gunk, grease and all other things accumulated within over the time.

As a result, it often causes some regular problems that includes the slow draining as well. But it’s nothing to be worried of, once you know how to get it fixed and get it back to its normal draining state.

I hope this article will help you “Do it Yourself” and make things easier for you than before.
